The good MLM company must be able to pattern or copy right their product or manufacturing processes. Unique product is a must for MLM company.

Thanks for the comments, Tyler and Brent. Right Tyler, a patent is only one factor in a laundry list of factors that determines the success of a product. I think it's a good place to start, though, for startup companies. Brent, good perspective on the value of the label. It fosters credibility and it's an example of how a company can make the sale easier for the rep.

Great insight Kevin.

At first, they counted on distributors to educate customers to the fact that MonaVie nutrient capacity is far higher than the brand at Walgreens since the brand at Walgreens is cheaply processed.

It holds more weight to actually have the label and rights vs me, the distributor, just telling someone.

I have confidence in MV not just because they have a good product and payplan, but because their leadership won't stop until they are #1. And they'll do it ethically.

Nice post Kevin. I think that like you mention here, IP protections can help you to "protect a product from price erosion." What will be interesting to see, however, is whether MonaVie can continue to assert it's advantage on brand strength alone.

I think you hinted at this, but the key it to continue to innovate and bring out new products that generate buzz and sales. I think that patent protections are helpful, but not the be-all end-all by any stretch.
